Deleted scene "The Black Cauldron" 1985

Here is a deleted scene that was on the DVD release of The Black Cauldron. I am guessing Glen animated a few of the shots with Gurgi. I will be sure to ask him when he returns to the office.

Vlad from Tangled: Pencil Test

This is a pencil test I did using one of the Pub Thug characters from Disney's Tangled. I have not done a production pencil test in about 10 years so please forgive the very rough edges. I am glad Tangled is doing well and I hope you (if you saw it) enjoyed the film.

Sandro Cleuzo: Asterix and The Vikings clips!!!

I really liked the animation and fun of this movie. The only way for me to watch it was on Youtube, but I still enjoyed it. Check it out if you get some time. Thanks for posting these Sandro!

Milt Kahl & Ollie Johnston

This clip is one of the reasons why I love animation. The ability to make a character come to life combined with technically achieving line control is amazing. Milt's animation on Medusa is broad but not overwhelmed with obscure posing and he applies it twice by animating her reflection. Ollie just captures the subtle but unsure movements of a young person. Both characters are completely believable.

This is animation at its best....at its best!

PTD Ranked number 10 as a Resource for Online Computer Animation

Top 50 Resources for Students Attending Online Computer Animation Schools

I received and email with some good news. The Pencil Test Depot has been ranked number 10 as a top resource for students wanting to get an online education in art and animation. I want to send a very big thanks to Shawn Fisher for informing me about his site. I hope that we can continue to provide some great eye candy and inspiration to students and professionals. The site would not be going with out all of the great finds on the internet and donations from some good people. Thanks again to everyone

Alex Kupershmidt: Reel Part 1

Hey guys,

So I finally got a chance to go through the work that was donated from a few people. The first person I got to condense was Alex Kupershmidt. I have had the pleasure of working with Alex on Tangled and hopefully I will get to continue working with him. Some of you may know Alex as the lead animator on Stitch for Disney's Lilo and Stitch. He has had a long career as a 2D animator and it is really cool to have someone like him around.

thanks for the donation Alex....

UPDATE: New Pencil Tests Coming Soon!

Hey Guys,

First I will say thank you for all the emails that I have received. I have a few to answer this weekend but be assured that I will. Just to let everyone know, I got a big chunk of pencil tests from two co-workers that are from their reels and it is going to take some time to dissect and upload them. Thanks for your patience and I will do my best to get things up as soon as I can.

All the best

Funnypages Productions: Tom Bancroft & Rob Corley

Hey guys,

So I was over at Cartoon Brew and came across a post in the comments section by Tom Bancroft. I have heard his and his brother Tony's name, floating around when I was working in Georgia but never saw his work. Tom gladly forwarded me his company reel which has a great body of pencil tests that are sure to please. The large body of pencil tests start around 1:10.

Tom Bancroft and Rob Corley are former Disney animators who have formed a company called Funnypages Productions located in Franklin, TN. (click the name and visit their site!). They specialize in all aspects of animation and have a proven track record. Thanks Tom and Rob for allowing us to post your work at the Pencil Test Depot.

...Hey future BIG shot animators!...

Hey guys,

I know many students use the site as a resource just as I do. I would love to hear from you guys directly. We have had a few students pass through Disney and many of them were familiar with Pencil Test Depot. The conversations were pretty inspiring and a lot of guys have emailed me from my personal site as well as through the Depot. While I was in school I know I tired to reach out to many professionals with varying results. Some were open to speaking with me and some were not as nice. I appreciate all the guys who gave me kind words to help me on my career path.

With that being said, it would be great to hear from the guys and pick your brains a little bit.

You can contact me here: admin@penciltestdepot.com

I look forward to talking to you guys and thanks again for the support

Bruce Ferriz....long time coming!

Bruce is an old colleague of mine and he gave me a copy of his reel a looooong time ago and I couldn't find it. Today was a good day because I came across it going through some old DVD cases. Bruce is a great animator and he was responsible for one of my favorite scenes in Prince of Egypt (when Ramses son dies, Bruce animated Moses breaking down in the corridor). His work on Spirit was also a great example of adding character to an animal and keeping the shapes solid and believable. Some of the tests are hard to see because of the record, but I hope you can make out the motion at least. I hope you enjoy these few clips.

Subway: William "BJ" Crawford

Its been a little while, but BJ sent me this good link. He is doing well at Blue Sky and loving the environment. This is just another example on why they hired him even with no 3D experience.

thanks BJ!

...SURVEY!...what is this crap?...

Hey guys,

So some of you may have seen the survey on the right hand side. The reasoning behind it is pretty simple...I want to gauge who is coming to the site and see if I can offer things that will be helpful to different groups. I would really appreciate everyone taking one sec to click the button that pertains to you. Thanks again for all the support and new things will be coming soon.

All the best

Plight of the Bumble Bee

I was crusing one of my favorite blogs (Sandro Cleuzo) and came across his post of a rare Disney short entirely in pencil test!!! Sandro says the animation is by: "...we can all enjoy and study the great animation by Fred Moore, Hal King, Cliff Nordberg and others and the great layouts...." This is some pretty nice animation work. Mickey and the Bee hit some great poses with some really fun timing. This is just another reason to love animation and remember all the creative things you can do and not be hyper real all the time.

-Enjoy

Tao Lung vs. Shifu by Rodolphe Guenoden

Hey guys,

I got an email from Patrick Stannard who timed out this animation from the Art of Kung Fu Panda book. That was pretty good of him to take the task on and trying to time it. Good job Patrick

No More Illusionist on the Depot... for now...maybe..

So I am on vacation and I recieved my first email telling me to remove something from the Pencil Test Depot.  We were contacted by the Producer of the movie who asked me to take down the work.  I put the disclaimer on the front of the site stating that we will take down the work of anyone who feels that it should not be up there.  It was a pretty nice letter with not threats made, but I figured by now studios would realize that a lot of people that post things are giving great exposure to some amazing work. If anyone else feels that their work should be removed feel free to contact me.

I want to apologize to everyone for this minor pinch on the site and I appreciate the ongoing support.  I will be posting new tests as soon as possible

"keep animating"

AKIRA: Pencil Tests!

Got a great email which linked me to CATSUKA which always has some great animation reels from Japan, Korea, and all over. One of my favorite Japanese Anime movies is AKIRA...which I am sure most people who probably come to this site have seen it and were also blown away. This is one of the videos but I have supplied the link where you can see them all!

Bruce Smith on Creating Dr Facilier

Bruce Smith is on of my favorite animators and having access to him is one of the giant bonuses of working at Disney. I found this clip where he discusses how he came up with the look and movement for the villain of Princess and the Frog; Dr Facilier. This is not a pencil test, but I thought it fit in very nicely to the site. We all love animation and the skill it takes to create it, so hearing a little more insight always inspires those of us who are animators, aspiring animators, and people love it in general.

作画の夕べ

I am a fan of animation.! I enjoy looking at all types of work. Anime is no exception. There are many Japanese animated movies in my collection and I really appreciate their control of the human form, cinematography, mech animation, and storytelling. Someone sent me this link and I really enjoyed watching the small tease of process in this clip. If anyone has some really nice Japanese pencil tests.... send them over!

Thank You!

I wanted to say thank you to everyone for being very supportive of the blog. The positive feedback is great and people have been friendly on the comments. I have been trying to get other tests outside of Disney work, but it is very hard to get a hold of a some of the works from other studios and various countries. I will keep trying my best to get some great pencil tests on the site.

Again I want to say thank you very much to the followers and the people who donate.

Rune Bennicke: Asterix and the Vikings Reel

I saw this reel posted by Rune a while back and I just finished watching the entire movie. I have to say that the animation is very solid (great control of volumes and fun shapes) and the movie was entertaining. Asterix is a series of French comic books created in 1959 by Rene Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. There have been 8 animated films created so far and I hope they make a few more! You can watch the movie on Youtube in several different languages and the quality is pretty good.

any of the animators who worked on this film... I would love to show your work here!

-Enjoy.

Eric Goldberg speaks on Frog...

Hey guys, this is not a pencil test but I think it fits well into the site. Hope you like.

...the wonderful thing about Tiggers...this pencil test is a wonderful thing (Milt Kahl)

This test is the first time Pooh and Tigger meet. Some parts are a little pix-elated, but it is still great to look at. Tigger has always been one of my favorites just because he brings so much contrast to the Winnie the Pooh world. I want to say this animation is done by Milt Kahl but I will find out when I get to the office. Enjoy the test everyone!

Tarzan: Early Rough Pencil Test (Glen Keane...CONFIRMED)

I was combing through sites and found this posted by Victor Ens. I remember seeing this test years ago from another animator. The poses where Jane stretches her body out have so much energy and life. You can tell this was an early test to see where to take her character upon meeting Tarzan under unusual circumstances. I don't know who animated this but I will ask Glen next week. Thanks for posting this Victor

"The Big Story" by Tim Watts and David Stoten

Another donation. This is pretty cool, the directors of this short worked out the idea in 2D before creating the piece in stop motion. Its not completely unheard of but it shows a nice level of dedication to both crafts. It probably saved a lot of work when going to create the stop motion version. Thanks for the links and please enjoy!
